6 June 2004 - LIDE/Fantasm freeware download
We've added a ZIP archive to the LIDE/Fantasm page
- for some reason the current version 8 of StuffIt was throwing an
error. This should avoid the issue.
31 March 2004 - Notes about Fantasm and LIDE
As you may or may not know Fantasm
development has been frozen for quite a while and therefore has not
been updated to work with later Mac operating systems. This means that
you may have varying success with the binary of LIDE and Fantasm.
Even though the license file says we offer
no support, we would love to hear from anyone who is using it or from
people who are having problems using it. We of course understand it may
not work for some people. We have had reports of problems (even
crashes)
with Mac OS
9.2.2 and others. We will help where we can - but of course we can't
promise
anything.
Feedback of any sort is most welcome. The contact address is support@lightsoft.co.uk
We will continue to provide the PPC
assembly language information part of the web-site (including the
Fantasm binaries and source) for the foreseeable future; we still have
a good number of hits with people looking for things like the 'PowerPC
Beginners Guide'.
Our hope is that some of the information
on the Fantasm part of the web-site is helpful. Certainly people are
still visiting it.
Best Regards,
Rob Probin

7 July 2003 - LIDE 3 source also available as .tar.gz.
Checkout the Fantasm page if you want the source as a .tar.gz archive.
5 July 2003 - LIDE 3 Open Source updated.
We have updated the source distribution to include a version of LXT that is required to build the projects. You can download the new archive here.
3 July 2003 - LIDE 3 now Open Source.
We have made available the source code to LIDE 3 under the GNU Public License (GPL). Please see the file COPYING in the release archive for full details.
This release includes projects for Anvil, Fantasm, Build, Linkers and other miscellaneous tools. You will need the last release of LIDE to build any of the projects (LIDE is built with itself).
A new forum has been set up where you can discuss any aspect of LIDE development, we'll try to answer any questions you may have as we get the time. You can download the complete project here. 6 MB Stuffit archive.
Hopefully the problem with the Language Definition File's (LDF's) has been cleared up, and Fantasm should run fine again on anyone's machine it affected.
If anyone still has a problem after downloading the new file, let us know.
Well, it's definitely a Fantasm problem - more specifically a bug in the LDF parser.
Depending upon which version of DropStuff it was compressed with, and which version of Stuffit Expander it was expanded with, the custom folder icon '"ICON?" files (which contain no data fork, but have a resource fork with the icons in for the folder) either stayed with no type and creator or ended up as TEXT-type files. We couldn't find a specific version of DropStuff that prevented the problem - although we didn't check every one!
This also explains why we didn't see the problem here, and why only a certain number of users actually saw the problem - and it very much depends upon the version of Stuffit Expander in use. At Lightsoft we have several Stuffit Expanders on our hard drives, but it is the one that is launched after download that matters.
Normally this shouldn't cause a problem - but it appears Anvil greatly dislikes LDF (text) files with no actual text in them. It parses all text files in this folder with a custom parser, and it almost certainly this parser which is at fault. It certainly isn't Aladdins fault, they make fine compression tools.
Rather than rebuilding the Anvil application with a bug fix in (which would have taken many weeks of testing), we decided to remove the custom folder icons from the core folders.
The bug fix for the Anvil application will hopefully make it into a future release.
A few people have reported the Freeware Fantasm package not working - crashing at boot up at the point where the status bar shows "Compiling Language Definition Files..." both on Mac OS 9, and running in Classic in Mac OS X.
We can reproduce it here, and are already looking at the problem - but thanks to the people who reported it to us. Early indicators are looking like it's a (repeatable) problem with the packaging - although we haven't any problems before.
If you are also having the problem, then please bear with us.
We have decided to stop charging for Fantasm/LIDE 3. We have made the full version of LIDE 3 available as a free download.
LIDE 3 contains all of Fantasm 6 along with additions for C programming in conjunction with Apple's MrC C and C++ compiler.
We are considering making the source code available for all the components making up LIDE 3; Anvil, Fantasm, the linkers etc. We must stress that at this time no decisions have been made. The source set would probably be the OS X port that was in-progress up until a few months ago when we decided to stop work on the project. We would appreciate any ideas you may have on the subject of Open Sourcing Fantasm.
You can get the download from Fantasm's page.
